This collection consists mainly of letters addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Josh Hawley, Edwin Hawley and family, Stockbridge, Ingham County, Mich., 1853-1889; from brother Robert Braithwaite, Portland Oregon Territory, 1850's; nephew George R. Braithwaite, 1860's, of Detroit and Ann Arbor, to cousin Edwin Hawley; from R.J. Winder, Abbyville, Reno County, Kan., 1887; from C.M. Wiberg and others, 1853, reporting death and estate clearance of Robert Braithwaite; S. Gradwile, Steubenville, Ohio, Aug. 14, 1859, giving description of flat bottom boat on Ohio River and the industry of the area; and George Bogardus, Waterloo, Mich., 1879, 1882. The correspondence of the Hawley family includes indentures, tax receipts, subpoenas, and promissory notes, plus a description by Robert Braithwaite of the Oregon country, cost of foodstuffs, horses, transportation, and skins.
